A stochastic system of particles is considered in which the sizes of the particles increase by successive binary mergers with the constraint that each coagulation event involves a particle with minimal size. Convergence of a suitably renormalized version of this process to a deterministic hydrodynamical limit is shown and the time evolution of the minimal size is studied for both deterministic and stochastic models.

L’évolution d’un système aléatoire de particules est étudiée lorsque la taille des particules croît par coagulation binaire, chaque réaction de coagulation impliquant nécessairement une particule de taille minimale. Nous montrons qu’une version renormalisée du processus stochastique associé converge vers une limite déterministe et étudions l’évolution temporelle de la taille minimale pour les modèles stochastique et déterministe.

For α∈(0, 1) an α-trimming, P^∗, of a probability P is a new probability obtained by re-weighting the probability of any Borel set, B, according to a positive weight function, f≤1/(1−α), in the way P^∗(B)=∫_Bf(x)P(dx).

If P, Q are probability measures on Euclidean space, we consider the problem of obtaining the best L₂-Wasserstein approximation between: (a) a fixed probability and trimmed versions of the other; (b) trimmed versions of both probabilities. These best trimmed approximations naturally lead to a new formulation of the mass transportation problem, where a part of the mass need not be transported. We explore the connections between this problem and the similarity of probability measures. As a remarkable result we obtain the uniqueness of the optimal solutions. These optimal incomplete transportation plans are not easily computable, but we provide theoretical support for Monte-Carlo approximations. Finally, we give a CLT for empirical versions of the trimmed distances and discuss some statistical applications.

Si P, Q sont deux probabilités sur l’espace euclidien, on considère le problème de minimiser la distance de Wasserstein L² entre (a) une probabilité et ses versions coupées (b) les versions coupées de deux probabilités. Ce problème mène naturellement à une nouvelle formulation du problème de transport de masse, où une partie de la masse ne doit pas être transportée. Nous explorons les liaisons entre ce problème et la similitude des mesures de probabilité. Un de nos résultats remarquables est l’unicité du transport de masse. Ces plans de transport optimal incomplets ne sont pas facilement calculables mais nous fournissons un appui théorique pour des approximations de Monte-Carlo. Enfin, nous donnons un TCL pour les versions empiriques des distances coupées et discutons certaines applications statistiques.

For the symbiotic branching model introduced in [Stochastic Process. Appl. 114 (2004) 127–160], it is shown that ageing and intermittency exhibit different behaviour for negative, zero, and positive correlations. Our approach also provides an alternative, elementary proof and refinements of classical results concerning second moments of the parabolic Anderson model with Brownian potential. Some refinements to more general (also infinite range) kernels of recent ageing results of [Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré Probab. Statist. 43 (2007) 461–480] for interacting diffusions are given.

Dans le cadre du modèle de branchement symbiotique introduit dans [Stochastic Process. Appl. 114 (2004) 127–160], nous montrons que le vieillissement et l’intermittence présentent différents comportements suivant les cas où la corrélation est négative, positive ou nulle. Notre approche permet de prouver et d’affiner de manière élémentaire des résultats classiques concernant les seconds moments du modèle parabolique d’Anderson avec potentiel Brownien. Nous raffinons aussi quelques résultats récents de vieillissement pour des diffusions interactives à noyaux généraux à portée infinie.

In this paper we explicit the derivative of the flows of one-dimensional reflected diffusion processes. We then get stochastic representations for derivatives of viscosity solutions of one-dimensional semilinear parabolic partial differential equations and parabolic variational inequalities with Neumann boundary conditions.

By direct calculus we identify explicitly the Lipschitzian norm of the solution of the Poisson equation $-\mathcal{L}G=g$ in terms of various norms of g, where $\mathcal{L}$ is a Sturm–Liouville operator or generator of a non-singular diffusion in an interval. This allows us to obtain the best constant in the L¹-Poincaré inequality (a little stronger than the Cheeger isoperimetric inequality) and some sharp transportation–information inequalities and concentration inequalities for empirical means. We conclude with several illustrative examples.

Par un calcul direct, on identifie explicitement la norme Lipschitzienne de la solution de l’équation de Poisson $-\mathcal {L}G=g$ en terme de différentes normes de g, où $\mathcal{L}$ est l’opérateur de Sturm–Liouville ou le générateur d’une diffusion non singulière sur un intervalle. Ainsi, nous pouvons obtenir, d’une part la meilleure constante dans l’inégalité de Poincaré L¹ (une inégalité un peu plus forte que l’inégalité isopérimétrique de Cheeger) et d’autre part certaines inégalités de transport-information et de concentration fines pour la moyenne empirique. On conclut avec des exemples illustratifs.

We consider the ensemble of curves {γ_α, N: α∈(0, 1], N∈ℕ} obtained by linearly interpolating the values of the normalized theta sum N^−1/2∑_n=0^N'−1exp(πin²α), 0≤N'<N. We prove the existence of limiting finite-dimensional distributions for such curves as N→∞, when α is distributed according to any probability measure λ, absolutely continuous w.r.t. the Lebesgue measure on [0, 1]. Our Main Theorem generalizes a result by Marklof [Duke Math. J. 97 (1999) 127–153] and Jurkat and van Horne [Duke Math. J. 48 (1981) 873–885, Michigan Math. J. 29 (1982) 65–77]. Our proof relies on the analysis of the geometric structure of such curves, which exhibit spiral-like patterns (curlicues) at different scales. We exploit a renormalization procedure constructed by means of the continued fraction expansion of α with even partial quotients and a renewal-type limit theorem for the denominators of such continued fraction expansions.

Nous considérons l’ensemble des courbes {γ_α, N: α∈(0, 1], N∈ℕ} obtenues en interpolant les valeurs des sommes thêta normalisées N^−1/2∑_n=0^N'−1exp(πin²α), 0≤N'<N. Nous démontrons l’existence de la limite des distributions fini-dimensionnelles de telles courbes quand N→∞, où α est distribué selon une quelconque mesure de probabilité λ, absolument continue par rapport à la mesure de Lebesgue sur [0, 1]. Notre théorème principal généralise un resultat de Marklof [Duke Math. J. 97 (1999) 127–153] et de Jurkat et van Horne [Duke Math. J. 48 (1981) 873–885, Michigan Math. J. 29 (1982) 65–77]. Notre démonstration se base sur l’analyse des structures géomètriques de telles courbes, qui présentent des motifs à spirale (curlicues) à différentes échelles. Nous exploitons une procédure de renormalisation construite par le developpement de α en fractions continues avec quotients partiels pairs et un théorème de renouvellement pour les dénominateurs de tels developpements en fractions continues.

The following question is due to Marc Yor: Let B be a Brownian motion and S_t=t+B_t. Can we define an $\mathcal{F}^{B}$-predictable process H such that the resulting stochastic integral (H⋅S) is a Brownian motion (without drift) in its own filtration, i.e. an $\mathcal{F}^{(H\cdot S)}$-Brownian motion?

In this paper we show that by dropping the requirement of $\mathcal{F}^{B}$-predictability of H we can give a positive answer to this question. In other words, we are able to show that there is a weak solution to Yor’s question. The original question, i.e., existence of a strong solution, remains open.

La question suivante a été posée par Marc Yor: Soit B un mouvement Brownien et S_t=t+B_t. Peut-on définir un processus H qui est $\mathcal{F}^{B}$-prévisible tel que l’intégrale stochastique (H⋅S) soit un mouvement Brownien (sans drift) pour sa propre filtration $\mathcal{F}^{(H\cdot S)}$?

Dans cet article nous fournissons une réponse affirmative en relâchant la condition que H soit $\mathcal{F}^{B}$-prévisible. Autrement dit, nous montrons qu’il existe une solution faible pour cette question de Yor. La question originale (c’est à dire, l’existence d’une solution forte) reste ouverte.

We generalize Brownian motion on a Riemannian manifold to the case of a family of metrics which depends on time. Such questions are natural for equations like the heat equation with respect to time dependent Laplacians (inhomogeneous diffusions). In this paper we are in particular interested in the Ricci flow which provides an intrinsic family of time dependent metrics. We give a notion of parallel transport along this Brownian motion, and establish a generalization of the Dohrn–Guerra or damped parallel transport, Bismut integration by part formulas, and gradient estimate formulas. One of our main results is a characterization of the Ricci flow in terms of the damped parallel transport. At the end of the paper we give a canonical definition of the damped parallel transport in terms of stochastic flows, and derive an intrinsic martingale which may provide information about singularities of the flow.

Nous généralisons la notion de mouvement brownien sur une variété au cas du mouvement brownien dépendant d’une famille de métriques. Cette généralisation est naturelle quand on s’intéresse aux équations de la chaleur avec un laplacien qui dépend du temps, ou de manière générale dans le cadre de diffusions in-homogènes. Dans cet article, nous nous sommes particulièrement intéressés au flot de Ricci, flot géométrique fournissant une famille intrinsèque de métriques. Nous donnons une notion de transport parallèle le long d’un tel processus, puis nous généralisons celle du transport parallèle déformé, et donnons une formule d’intégration par parties à la Bismut dont nous tirons des formules de contrôle de norme de gradients de solutions d’équation de la chaleur in-homogène. Un des résultats principaux de cet article est une caractérisation probabiliste du flot de Ricci, en terme du transport parallèle déformé. Dans les dernières sections, nous donnons une définition canonique du transport parallèle déformé en utilisant le flot stochastique, et nous en dérivons une martingale intrinsèque, qui pourrait donner des informations sur les singularités du flot.

We study a one-dimensional Brownian motion conditioned on a self-repelling behaviour. Given a nondecreasing positive function f(t), t≥0, consider the measures μ_t obtained by conditioning a Brownian path so that L_s≤f(s), for all s≤t, where L_s is the local time spent at the origin by time s. It is shown that the measures μ_t are tight, and that any weak limit of μ_t as t→∞ is transient provided that t^−3/2f(t) is integrable. We conjecture that this condition is sharp and present a number of open problems.

Etant donnée une fonction croîssante f(t), t≥0, considérons la mesure μ_t obtenue lorsqu’on on conditionne un mouvement brownien de sorte que L_s≤f(s), pour tout s≤t, où L_s est le temps local accumulé au temps s à l’origine. Nous montrons que les mesures μ_t sont tendues, et que toute limite faible de μ_t lorsque t→∞ est la loi d’un processus transient si t^−3/2f(t) est intégrable. Nous conjecturons que cette condition est également nécessaire pour la transience et proposons un certain nombre de questions ouvertes.

In [Probab. Theory Related Fields 141 (2008) 543–567], the authors proved the uniqueness among the solutions of quadratic BSDEs with convex generators and unbounded terminal conditions which admit every exponential moments. In this paper, we prove that uniqueness holds among solutions which admit some given exponential moments. These exponential moments are natural as they are given by the existence theorem. Thanks to this uniqueness result we can strengthen the nonlinear Feynman–Kac formula proved in [Probab. Theory Related Fields 141 (2008) 543–567].

Les auteurs de l’article [Probab. Theory Related Fields 141 (2008) 543–567] ont prouvé un résultat d’unicité pour les solutions d’EDSRs quadratiques de générateur convexe et de condition terminale non bornée ayant tous leurs moments exponentiels finis. Dans ce papier, nous prouvons que ce résultat d’unicité reste vrai pour des solutions qui admettent uniquement certains moments exponentiels finis. Ces moments exponentiels sont reliés de manière naturelle à ceux présents dans le théorème d’existence. À l’aide de ce résultat d’unicité nous pouvons améliorer la formule de Feynman–Kac non linéaire prouvée dans [Probab. Theory Related Fields 141 (2008) 543–567].

We consider excited random walks (ERWs) on ℤ with a bounded number of i.i.d. cookies per site without the non-negativity assumption on the drifts induced by the cookies. Kosygina and Zerner [15] have shown that when the total expected drift per site, δ, is larger than 1 then ERW is transient to the right and, moreover, for δ>4 under the averaged measure it obeys the Central Limit Theorem. We show that when δ∈(2, 4] the limiting behavior of an appropriately centered and scaled excited random walk under the averaged measure is described by a strictly stable law with parameter δ/2. Our method also extends the results obtained by Basdevant and Singh [2] for δ∈(1, 2] under the non-negativity assumption to the setting which allows both positive and negative cookies.

On considère des marches aléatoires excitées sur ℤ avec un nombre borné de cookies i.i.d. à chaque site, ceci sans l’hypothèse de positivité. Auparavent, Kosygina et Zerner [15] ont établi que si la dérive totale moyenne par site, δ, est strictement superieur à 1, alors la marche est transiente (vers la droite) et, de plus, pour δ>4 il y a un théorème central limite pour la position de la marche. Ici, on démontre que pour δ∈(2, 4] cette position, convenablement centrée et réduite, converge vers une loi stable de paramètre δ/2. L’approche permet également d’étendre les résultats de Basdevant et Singh [2] pour δ∈(1, 2] à notre cadre plus général.

We demonstrate that stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H>½ have similar ergodic properties as SDEs driven by standard Brownian motion. The focus in this article is on hypoelliptic systems satisfying Hörmander’s condition. We show that such systems enjoy a suitable version of the strong Feller property and we conclude that under a standard controllability condition they admit a unique stationary solution that is physical in the sense that it does not “look into the future.”

The main technical result required for the analysis is a bound on the moments of the inverse of the Malliavin covariance matrix, conditional on the past of the driving noise.

Nous démontrons que les équations différentielles stochastiques (EDS) conduites par des mouvements Browniens fractionnaires à paramètre de Hurst H>½ ont des propriétés ergodiques similaires aux EDS usuelles conduites par des mouvements Browniens. L’intérêt principal du présent article est de pouvoir traîter également des systèmes hypoelliptiques satisfaisant la condition de Hörmander. Nous montrons qu’une version adéquate de la propriété de Feller forte est vérifiée par de tels systèmes et nous en déduisons que, sous une propriété de controllabilité usuelle, ils admettent une unique solution stationnaire qui ait un sens physique.

L’ingrédient principal de notre analyse est une borne supérieure sur les moments inverses de la matrice de Malliavin associée, conditionnée au passé du bruit.
