We study the statistics of the largest eigenvalues of real symmetric and sample covariance matrices when the entries are heavy tailed. Extending the result obtained by Soshnikov in (Electron. Commun. Probab. 9 (2004) 82–91), we prove that, in the absence of the fourth moment, the asymptotic behavior of the top eigenvalues is determined by the behavior of the largest entries of the matrix.

On étudie la loi des plus grandes valeurs propres de matrices aléatoires symétriques réelles et de covariance empirique quand les coefficients des matrices sont à queue lourde. On étend le résultat obtenu par Soshnikov dans (Electron. Commun. Probab. 9 (2004) 82–91) et on montre que le comportement asymptotique des plus grandes valeurs propres est déterminé par les plus grandes entrées de la matrice.

We study how iterated convolutions of probability measures compare under stochastic domination. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an integer n such that μ^*n is stochastically dominated by ν^*n for two given probability measures μ and ν. As a consequence we obtain a similar theorem on the majorization order for vectors in R^d. In particular we prove results about catalysis in quantum information theory.

Nous étudions comment les convolutions itérées des mesures de probabilités se comparent pour la domination stochastique. Nous donnons des conditions nécessaires et suffisantes pour l’existence d’un entier n tel que μ^*n soit stochastiquement dominée par ν^*n, étant données deux mesures de probabilités μ et ν. Nous obtenons en corollaire un théorème similaire pour des vecteurs de R^d et la relation de Schur-domination. Plus spécifiquement, nous démontrons des résultats sur la catalyse en théorie quantique de l’information.

L^(γ) is known to be the infinitesimal generator of a positive α-self-similar Feller process, which has been introduced by Lamperti [Z. Wahrsch. Verw. Gebiete 22 (1972) 205–225]. The eigenfunctions are expressed in terms of a new family of power series which includes, for instance, the modified Bessel functions of the first kind and some generalizations of the Mittag-Leffler function. Then, we show that some specific combinations of these functions are Laplace transforms of self-decomposable or infinitely divisible distributions concentrated on the positive line with respect to the main argument, and, more surprisingly, with respect to the parameter ψ(γ). In particular, this generalizes a result of Hartman [Ann. Sc. Norm. Super. Pisa Cl. Sci. IV-III (1976) 267–287] for the increasing solution of the Bessel differential equation. Finally, we compute, for some cases, the associated decreasing eigenfunctions and derive the Laplace transform of the exponential functionals of some spectrally negative Lévy processes with a negative first moment.

We consider a nearest-neighbor, one-dimensional random walk {X_n}_n≥0 in a random i.i.d. environment, in the regime where the walk is transient with speed v_P>0 and there exists an s∈(1, 2) such that the annealed law of n^−1/s(X_n−nv_P) converges to a stable law of parameter s. Under the quenched law (i.e., conditioned on the environment), we show that no limit laws are possible. In particular we show that there exist sequences {t_k} and {t_k'} depending on the environment only, such that a quenched central limit theorem holds along the subsequence t_k, but the quenched limiting distribution along the subsequence t_k' is a centered reverse exponential distribution. This complements the results of a recent paper of Peterson and Zeitouni (arXiv:math/0704.1778v1 [math.PR]) which handled the case when the parameter s∈(0, 1).

On examine des marches aléatoires unidimensionnelles en milieu aléatoire avec un environnement i.i.d., dans le régime où la marche est transiente avec vitesse v_P>0 et où il existe s∈(1, 2) tel que la loi “annealed” (i.e., moyennée) de n^−1/s(X_n−nv_P) converge vers une loi stable de paramètre s. Sous la loi “quenched” (i.e. conditionnelement à l’environnement) on montre qu’il n’existe pas de loi limite. En particulier on prouve qu’il existe des suites {t_k} et {t_k'}, dépendant de l’environnement, tel qu’un théorème de limite centrale quenched est valide le long de la suite t_k, mais où la distribution limite suivant la suite t_k' est une distribution centrée exponentielle inverse. Ceci complète les résultats d’un article récent de Peterson et Zeitouni (arXiv:math/0704.1778v1 [math.PR]) qui traitait le case de paramètre s∈(0, 1).

Let T be Dunford–Schwartz operator on a probability space (Ω, μ). For f∈L^p(μ), p>1, we obtain growth conditions on $‖∑_{k=1}^nT^kf‖_p$ which imply that $\frac{1}{n^{1/p}}∑_{k=1}^nT^kf→0μ$-a.e. In the particular case that p=2 and T is the isometry induced by a probability preserving transformation we get better results than in the general case; these are used to obtain a quenched central limit theorem for additive functionals of stationary ergodic Markov chains, which improves those of Derriennic–Lin and Wu–Woodroofe.

Pour f∈L^p(μ), p>1, nous obtenons des théorèmes ergodiques du type $\frac{1}{n^{1/p}}∑_{k=1}^nT^kf→0μ$-p.s. sous des conditions portant sur la croissance de $‖∑_{k=1}^nT^kf‖_p$. Lorsque T est induit par une transformation préservant la mesure et que p=2, nous obtenons de meilleurs résultats. Ces derniers sont alors utilisés pour obtenir le théorème central limite “quenched” pour les sommes partielles associées aux fonctionnelles de chaînes de Markov stationnaires et ergodiques. Nous améliorons ainsi des résultats antérieurs de Derriennic–Lin et Wu–Woodroofe.

We develop a method, based on a Bochner-type identity, to obtain estimates on the exponential rate of decay of the relative entropy from equilibrium of Markov processes in discrete settings. When this method applies the relative entropy decays in a convex way. The method is shown to be rather powerful when applied to a class of birth and death processes. We then consider other examples, including inhomogeneous zero-range processes and Bernoulli–Laplace models. For these two models, known results were limited to the homogeneous case, and obtained via the martingale approach, whose applicability to inhomogeneous models is still unclear.

Nous développons une méthode, insiprée par une identité de Bochner, pour obtenir des estimées sur la decroissance exponentielle de l’entropie relative de processus de Markov avec sauts. Lorsque nous pouvons appliquer cette méthode, l’entropie relative est une fonction convexe du temps. On montre que la méthode s’applique de facon efficace à une large classe de processus de naissance et mort. On considère aussi d’autres exemples, comme les processus de zero-range et de Bernoulli–Laplace dans des cas non-homogènes. Pour ces derniers modèles les résultats connus, obtenus par la méthode de martingale, étaient limités au cas homogène.

We present an analogue of the Harer–Zagier recursion formula for the moments of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble in the form of a five term recurrence equation. The proof is based on simple Gaussian integration by parts and differential equations on Laplace transforms. A similar recursion formula holds for the Gaussian Symplectic Ensemble. As in the complex case, the result is interpreted as a recursion formula for the number of 1-vertex maps in locally orientable surfaces with a given number of edges and faces. This moment recurrence formula is also applied to a sharp bound on the tail of the largest eigenvalue of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble and, by moment comparison, of families of Wigner matrices.

Ce travail présente un analogue de la relation de récurrence de Harer et Zagier pour les moments de l’Ensemble Orthogonal Gaussien sous la forme d’une récurrence à cinq termes. La démonstration s’appuie sur des intégrations par parties gaussiennes et des équations différentielles sur les transformées de Laplace. Une relation similaire est établie pour l’Ensemble Symplectique Gaussien. Comme dans le cas complexe, cette relation s’interprète comme une formule de récurrence pour le nombre de cartes enracinées à nombre de faces et de côtés donné plongées dans des surfaces localement orientées. Cette relation de récurrence sur les moments fournit également une borne sur la loi de la plus grande valeur propre de l’Ensemble Orthogonal Gaussien et, par comparaison de moments, de familles de matrices de Wigner.

Consider the partition function of a directed polymer in ℤ^d, d≥1, in an IID field. We assume that both tails of the negative and the positive part of the field are at least as light as exponential. It is well known that the free energy of the polymer is equal to a deterministic constant for almost every realization of the field and that the upper tail of the large deviations is exponential. The lower tail of the large deviations is typically lighter than exponential. In this paper we obtain sharp estimates on the lower tail of the large deviations given in terms of the distribution of the IID field. Our proofs are also applicable to the model of directed last passage percolation and (non-directed) first passage percolation.

Considérons la fonction de partition d’un polymère dirigé dans ℤ^d, d≥1, d’un champ IID. On suppose que les queues des parties positive et négative sont au moins aussi légères qu’une exponentielle. Il est bien connu que l’énergie libre du polymère est égale à une constante déterministe pour presque toute réalisation du champ et que la queue supérieure des grandes déviations est exponentielle. La queue inférieure des grandes déviations est typiquement plus légère qu’une exponentielle. Dans cet article nous obtenons des estimations précises sur la queue inférieure des grandes déviations en fonction de la distribution du champ IID. Nos preuves sont également applicables au modèle de percolation de dernier passage dirigé et à celui de percolation de premier passage (non dirigé).

This article concerns branching Brownian motion (BBM) with dyadic branching at rate β|y|^p for a particle with spatial position y∈ℝ, where β>0. It is known that for p>2 the number of particles blows up almost surely in finite time, while for p=2 the expected number of particles alive blows up in finite time, although the number of particles alive remains finite almost surely, for all time. We define the right-most particle, R_t, to be the supremum of the spatial positions of the particles alive at time t and study the asymptotics of R_t as t→∞. In the case of constant breeding at rate β the linear asymptotic for R_t is long established. Here, we find asymptotic results for R_t in the case p∈(0, 2]. In contrast to the linear asymptotic in standard BBM we find polynomial asymptotics of arbitrarily high order as p↑2, and a non-trivial limit for lnR_t when p=2. Our proofs rest on the analysis of certain additive martingales, and related spine changes of measure.

Cet article concerne un mouvement brownien branchant (BBM) en deux particules avec un taux β|y|^p pour une particule située en y∈ℝ, avec une constante β>0. Il est connu que pour p>2, le nombre de particules explose presque sûrement en temps fini, alors que pour p=2 le nombre de particules explose en moyenne en temps fini bien qu’il reste fini presque sûrement à tout moment. Nous définissons la particule la plus à droite R_t comme le supremum des positions spatiales des particules vivant à l’instant t et étudions les asymptotiques de R_t quand t tend vers l’infini. Dans le cas d’une reproduction à taux constant β, l’asymptotique linéaire de R_t est bien connue. Ici, nous trouvons des résultats asymptotiques pour R_t dans le cas où p∈(0, 2]. Contrastant avec les asymptotiques linéaires du BBM standard, nous trouvons des asymptotiques polynomiales de degré arbitrairement grand quand p croit vers 2, et une limite non triviale pour lnR_t quand p=2. Nos preuves s’appuient sur certaines martingales positives et des changements de mesures.

We obtain upper bounds for minimal metrics in the central limit theorem for sequences of independent real-valued random variables.

We consider the periodic planar Lorentz process with convex obstacles (and with finite horizon). In this model, a point particle moves freely with elastic reflection at the fixed convex obstacles. The random scenery is given by a sequence of independent, identically distributed, centered random variables with finite and non-null variance. To each obstacle, we associate one of these random variables. We suppose that each time the particle hits an obstacle, it wins the amount given by the random variable associated to the obstacle. We prove a convergence in distribution to a Wiener process for the total amount won by the particle (normalized by $\sqrt{n\log(n)}$) when the time n goes to infinity. Such a result has been established by Bolthausen [Ann. Probab. 17 (1989) 108–115)] in the case of random walks in ℤ² given by sums of independent identically distributed random variables. We follow the scheme of his proof. The lack of independence will be compensated by some extensions of the local limit theorem proved by Szász and Varjú in [Ergodic Theory Dynam. Systems 24 (2004) 257–278]. This paper answers a question of Szász about the asymptotic behaviour of ${∑_{k=0}^{n−1}}ζS_{k}$ where (ζ_ℓ)_ℓ is a sequence of i.i.d. centered random variables (with finite and non-null variance) and where S_k is the number of the cell at the kth reflection.

Nous considérons le processus de Lorentz dans le plan avec des obstacles convexes disposés de manière périodique (nous supposons de plus que l’horizon est fini). Dans ce modèle, une particule ponctuelle se déplace à vitesse unitaire et sa vitesse obéit à la loi de la réflexion de Descartes à l’instant d’un choc contre un obstacle. La scène aléatoire est donnée par une suite de variables aléatoires indépendantes de même loi, centrées, de variance finie non nulle. Chacune de ces variables aléatoires est associée à un obstacle. Nous associons à la particule une somme qui évolue avec le temps. Cette somme est nulle au départ. A chaque fois que la particule touche un obstacle, elle gagne la valeur de la variable aléatoire associée à cet obstacle. Nous montrons que la somme totale gagnée au temps n (normalisée par $\sqrt{n\log(n)}$) converge en loi vers un processus de Wiener lorsque n tend vers l’infini. Un tel résultat a été établi par Bolthausen [Ann. Probab. 17 (1989) 108–115)] dans le cas de marches aléatoires sur ℤ² avec des pas indépendants et de même loi. Nous nous inspirons de son travail. Nous remplaçons l’hypothèse d’indépendance de [Ann. Probab. 17 (1989) 108–115)] par des extensions du théorème limite local établi par Szász and Varjú in [Ergodic Theory Dynam. Systems 24 (2004) 257–278]. Ce travail apporte une réponse à une question de Szász concernant le comportement asymptotique de ${∑_{k=0}^{n−1}}ζS_{k}$ où (ζ_ℓ)_ℓ est une suite de variables aléatoires indépendantes identiquement distribuées, centrées, de variance finie et non nulle et où S_k désigne le numéro de la cellule dans laquelle se trouve la particule à l’instant de la kème reflexion.

We consider the parabolic Anderson model, the Cauchy problem for the heat equation with random potential in ℤ^d. We use i.i.d. potentials ξ:ℤ^d→ℝ in the third universality class, namely the class of almost bounded potentials, in the classification of van der Hofstad, König and Mörters [Commun. Math. Phys. 267 (2006) 307–353]. This class consists of potentials whose logarithmic moment generating function is regularly varying with parameter γ=1, but do not belong to the class of so-called double-exponentially distributed potentials studied by Gärtner and Molchanov [Probab. Theory Related Fields 111 (1998) 17–55].

In [Commun. Math. Phys. 267 (2006) 307–353] the asymptotics of the expected total mass was identified in terms of a variational problem that is closely connected to the well-known logarithmic Sobolev inequality and whose solution, unique up to spatial shifts, is a perfect parabola. In the present paper we show that those potentials whose shape (after appropriate vertical shifting and spatial rescaling) is away from that parabola contribute only negligibly to the total mass. The topology used is the strong L¹-topology on compacts for the exponentials of the potential. In the course of the proof, we show that any sequence of approximate minimisers of the above variational formula approaches some spatial shift of the minimiser, the parabola.

Nous considérons le modèle Anderson parabolique donné par le problème de Cauchy pour l’équation de la chaleur avec un potentiel aléatoire dans ℤ^d. Nous utilisons des potentiels i.i.d. ξ:ℤ^d→ℝ qui sont dans la troisième classe d’universalité de la classification de van der Hofstad, König and Mörters [Commun. Math. Phys. 267 (2006) 307–353]. Cette classe, les potentiels presque bornés, contient les potentiels dont le logarithme de la transformée de Laplace est de variation régulière avec paramètre γ=1, mais qui n’appartiennent pas à la classe des potentiels “double-exponentially distributed” étudiée par Gärtner et Molchanov dans [Probab. Dans [Commun. Math. Phys. 267 (2006) 307–353], le comportement asymptotique de l’espérance de la masse totale est décrit par un problème variationnel qui est lié à l’inégalité de Sobolev logarithmique. La solution de ce problème, qui est unique à des translations spatiales près, est une parabole. Dans cet article, nous montrons que la contribution à la masse totale des potentiels qui ont (après un changement d’échelle) une forme différente est négligeable. Nous utilisons la topologie L¹ sur les compacts pour l’exponentielle du potentiel. Au cours de la preuve, nous montrons que n’importe quelle suite des solutions approximatives du problème variationnel converge vers une translation spatiale de la solution qui est une parabole.

Let D be an unbounded domain in ℝ^d with d≥3. We show that if D contains an unbounded uniform domain, then the symmetric reflecting Brownian motion (RBM) on ̅D is transient. Next assume that RBM X on ̅D is transient and let Y be its time change by Revuz measure 1_D(x)m(x) dx for a strictly positive continuous integrable function m on ̅D. We further show that if there is some r>0 so that D∖̅B̅(̅0̅,̅ ̅r̅) is an unbounded uniform domain, then Y admits one and only one symmetric diffusion that genuinely extends it and admits no killings.

Let Z=(X, Y) be a planar Brownian motion, $\mathcal{Z}$ the filtration it generates, and B a linear Brownian motion in the filtration $\mathcal{Z}$. One says that B (or its filtration) is maximal if no other linear $\mathcal{Z}$-Brownian motion has a filtration strictly bigger than that of B. For instance, it is shown in [In Séminaire de Probabilités XLI 265–278 (2008) Springer] that B is maximal if there exists a linear Brownian motion C independent of B and such that the planar Brownian motion (B, C) generates the same filtration $\mathcal{Z}$ as Z. We do not know if this sufficient condition for maximality is also necessary.

We give a necessary condition for B to be maximal, and a sufficient condition which may be weaker than the existence of such a C. This sufficient condition is used to prove that the linear Brownian motion ∫(X dY−Y dX)/|Z|, which governs the angular part of Z, is maximal.

Nous donnons une conditions nécessaire de maximalité, ainsi qu’une condition suffisante peut-être plus faible que l’existence d’un tel C. À l’aide de cette condition suffisante, nous démontrons que le mouvement brownien linéaire ∫(X dY−Y dX)/|Z|, qui régit la partie angulaire de Z, est maximal.
