This paper is concerned with nonparametric estimation of the Lévy density of a pure jump Lévy process. The sample path is observed at n discrete instants with fixed sampling interval. We construct a collection of estimators obtained by deconvolution methods and deduced from appropriate estimators of the characteristic function and its first derivative. We obtain a bound for the ${\mathbb{L}}^{2}$>-risk, under general assumptions on the model. Then we propose a penalty function that allows to build an adaptive estimator. The risk bound for the adaptive estimator is obtained under additional assumptions on the Lévy density. Examples of models fitting in our framework are described and rates of convergence of the estimator are discussed.

Ce travail étudie l’estimation non paramétrique de la densité d’un processus de Lévy de saut pur. Les trajectoires sont observées à n instants discrets de pas fixé. Nous construisons une collection d’estimateurs obtenus par des méthodes de type déconvolution, et s’appuyant sur des estimateurs pertinents de la fonction caractéristique et de ses dérivées. Sous des hypothèses assez générales sur le modèle, nous obtenons une borne pour le risque quadratique intégré. Nous proposons ensuite une pénalité permettant de construire un estimateur adaptatif. La borne de risque de l’estimateur adaptatatif est obtenue sous des hypothèses supplémentaires sur la densité de la mesure de Lévy. Nous donnons pour finir des exemples de modèles adaptés à notre contexte et nous calculons dans chaque cas la vitesse de convergence de l’estimateur.

The aim of this paper is to study the long-term behavior of a class of self-interacting diffusion processes on ℝ^d. These are solutions to SDEs with a drift term depending on the actual position of the process and its normalized occupation measure μ_t. These processes have so far been studied on compact spaces by Benaïm, Ledoux and Raimond, using stochastic approximation methods. We extend these methods to ℝ^d, assuming a confinement potential satisfying some conditions. These hypotheses on the confinement potential are required since in general the process can be transient, and is thus very difficult to analyze. Finally, we illustrate our study with an example on ℝ².

Le but de cet article est d’étudier le comportement asymptotique d’une classe de processus en auto-interaction sur ℝ^d. Ces processus de diffusion s’écrivent comme solution d’E.D.S. dont le terme de dérive dépend à la fois de la position actuelle du processus et de sa mesure empirique μ_t. Jusqu’à présent, Benaïm, Ledoux et Raimond ont mené l’étude de ce type de diffusions sur des espaces compacts, via des méthodes d’approximation stochastique. Nous étendons ces techniques à ℝ^d, en supposant l’existence d’un potentiel de confinement (vérifiant certaines conditions). Nous avons besoin de ces hypothèses sur le potentiel de confinement, car, en général, un tel processus peut être transient. Nous concluons cet article par un exemple sur ℝ².

In this paper, we prove a result linking the square and the rectangular R-transforms, the consequence of which is a surprising relation between the square and rectangular versions the free additive convolutions, involving the Marchenko–Pastur law. Consequences on random matrices, on infinite divisibility and on the arithmetics of the square versions of the free additive and multiplicative convolutions are given.

Dans cet article, on prouve un résultat reliant les versions carré et rectangulaire de la R-transformée, qui a pour conséquence une relation surprenante entre les versions carré et rectangulaire de la convolution libre additive, impliquant la loi de Marchenko–Pastur. On donne des conséquences de ce résultat portant sur les matrices aléatoires, sur l’infinie divisibilité et sur l’arithmétique des versions carré des convolutions additives et multiplicatives.

In this paper we deepen the study of the nonlinear principal components introduced by Salinelli in 1998, referring to a real random variable. New insights on their probabilistic and statistical meaning are given with some properties. An estimation procedure based on spline functions, adapting to a statistical framework the classical Rayleigh–Ritz method, is introduced. Asymptotic properties of the estimator are proved, providing an upper bound for the rate of convergence under suitable mild conditions. Some applications to the goodness-of-fit test and the construction of bivariate distributions are proposed.

Dans cet article nous étudions les composantes principales non linéaires définies par Salinelli en 1998, dans le cas d’une variable aléatoire réelle. La signification probabiliste et statistique est approfondie et des proprietés sont illustrées. Une procédure d’estimation basée sur les fonctions splines, qui adapte la méthode classique de Rayleigh–Ritz, est présentée. Des propriétés asymptotiques de cet estimateur sont établies, et on donne une borne pour la vitesse de convergence sous des conditions générales. Des applications aux tests d’ajustement et à la construction de distributions bivariées sont proposées.

The methods to establish the limiting spectral distribution (LSD) of large dimensional random matrices includes the well-known moment method which invokes the trace formula. Its success has been demonstrated in several types of matrices such as the Wigner matrix and the sample covariance matrix. In a recent article Bryc, Dembo and Jiang [Ann. Probab. 34 (2006) 1–38] establish the LSD for random Toeplitz and Hankel matrices using the moment method. They perform the necessary counting of terms in the trace by splitting the relevant sets into equivalence classes and relating the limits of the counts to certain volume calculations. Bose and Sen [Electron. J. Probab. 13 (2008) 588–628] have developed this method further and have provided a general framework which deals with symmetric matrices with entries coming from an independent sequence.

In this article we enlarge the scope of the above approach to consider matrices of the form $A_{p}=\frac{1}{n}XX^{\prime}$ where X is a p×n matrix with real entries. We establish some general results on the existence of the spectral distribution of such matrices, appropriately centered and scaled, when p→∞ and n=n(p)→∞ and p/n→y with 0≤y<∞. As examples we show the existence of the spectral distribution when X is taken to be the appropriate asymmetric Hankel, Toeplitz, circulant and reverse circulant matrices. In particular, when y=0, the limits for all these matrices coincide and is the same as the limit for the symmetric Toeplitz derived in Bryc, Dembo and Jiang [Ann. Probab. 34 (2006) 1–38]. In other cases, we obtain new limiting spectral distributions for which no closed form expressions are known. We demonstrate the nature of these limits through some simulation results.

Une des méthodes pour obtenir la limite des distributions spectrales (LSD) des grandes matrices aléatoires est la fameuse méthode des moments, basée sur la formule des traces. Son succès a été clairement établi pour différents types de matrices telles que les matrices de Wigner et les matrices de covariance. Dans un article récent, Bryc, Dembo et Jiang [Ann. Probab. 34 (2006) 1–38] ont obtenu la LSD pour des matrices de Toeplitz et de Hankel en utilisant cette méthode. Ils arrivent à estimer les traces des moments de telles matrices en séparant les différents termes par classes d’équivalence et en reliant les asymptotiques des dénombrements afférents avec les calculs de certains volumes. Bose et Sen [Electron. J. Probab. 13 (2008) 588–628] ont développé cette idée et ont donné un cadre général pour traiter de matrices symmétriques dont les entrées viennent d’une suite indépendante.

Dans cet article, nous généralisons cette approche pour considérer des matrices de la form $A_{p}=\frac{1}{n}XX'$ où X est une matrice p×n avec des entrées réelles. Nous démontrons un résultat général d’existence de la LSD de telles matrices, correctement recentrées et rééchelonnées, quand p et n tendent vers l’infini de telle façon que p/n tende vers y∈(0, ∞). Par exemple, nous montrons l’existence de la LSD quand X est la matrice asymétrique de Hankel, de Toeplitz, circulante ou circulante inverse. En particulier, quand y=0, les limites correspondent à celles obtenues par Bryc, Dembo et Jiang [Ann. Probab. 34 (2006) 1–38]. Sinon, nous obtenons de nouvelles lois limites pour lesquelles aucune expression explicite n’est connue. Nous étudions ces lois par quelques simulations.

In this paper, we consider Poincaré inequalities for non-Euclidean metrics on ℝ^d. These inequalities enable us to derive precise dimension free concentration inequalities for product measures. This technique is appropriate for a large scope of concentration rate: between exponential and Gaussian and beyond. We give equivalent functional forms of these Poincaré type inequalities in terms of transportation-cost inequalities and inf-convolution inequalities. Workable sufficient conditions are given and a comparison is made with super Poincaré inequalities.

Dans cet article, nous introduisons des inégalités de Poincaré pour des métriques non-euclidiennes sur ℝ^d et nous montrons qu’elles entraînent des inégalités de concentrations adimensionnelles pour les mesures produits. Cette technique nous permet d’atteindre un spectre très large de taux de concentration, aussi bien sous et sur-gaussiens. Par ailleurs, nous montrons que ces inégalités de Poincaré admettent des formes fonctionnelles équivalentes en termes d’inégalités de transport et d’inf-convolution. Enfin, nous donnons des conditions suffisantes pour ces inégalités de Poincaré et nous les comparons aux inégalités super-Poincaré.

We improve the geometric properties of $\operatorname{SLE}(\kappa;\vec{\rho})$> processes derived in an earlier paper, which are then used to obtain more results about the duality of SLE. We find that for κ∈(4, 8), the boundary of a standard chordal SLE(κ) hull stopped on swallowing a fixed x∈ℝ∖{0} is the image of some $\operatorname{SLE}(16/\kappa;\vec {\rho})$ trace started from a random point. Using this fact together with a similar proposition in the case that κ≥8, we obtain a description of the boundary of a standard chordal SLE(κ) hull for κ>4, at a finite stopping time. Finally, we prove that for κ>4, in many cases, a chordal or strip $\operatorname{SLE}(\kappa;\vec{\rho})$ trace a.s. ends at a single point.

Nous améliorons des résultats précédemment obtenus concernant les propriétés géométriques des processus $\operatorname{SLE}(\kappa;\vec{\rho})$, que nous utilisons ensuite pour étudier la propriété dite de dualité des processus SLE.

Nous prouvons que pour κ∈(4, 8), la frontière de l’enveloppe d’un SLE(κ) chordal standard arrêté quand il disconnecte un point fixe x∈ℝ\{0} de l’infini est une courbe $\operatorname{SLE}(16/\kappa,\vec{\rho})$ issue d’un point aléatoire. Nous obtenons ainsi une description de la frontière de l’enveloppe d’un SLE(κ) pour κ>4. Finalement, nous démontrons que pour κ>4, dans de nombreux cas, la courbe de processus $\operatorname{SLE}(\kappa;\vec{\rho})$ généralisés (par exemple dans une bande) se termine presque sûrement en un point unique.

A new class of relativistic diffusions encompassing all the previously studied examples has recently been introduced in the article of C. Chevalier and F. Debbasch (J. Math. Phys. 49 (2008) 043303), both in a heuristic and analytic way. A stochastic approach of these processes is proposed here, in the general framework of Lorentzian geometry. In considering the dynamics of the random motion in strongly causal spacetimes, we are able to give a simple definition of the one-particle distribution function associated with each process of the class and prove its fundamental property. This result not only provides a dynamical justification of the analytical approach developped up to now (enabling us to recover many of the results obtained so far), but it provides a new general H-theorem. It also sheds some light on the importance of the large scale structure of the manifold in the asymptotic behaviour of the Franchi–Le Jan process. This approach is also the source of many interesting questions that have no analytical counterparts.

C. Chevalier et F. Debbasch ont récemment introduit dans l’article (J. Math. Phys. 49 (2008) 043303) une nouvelle classe de diffusions relativistes comprenant toutes celles étudiées jusqu’̀à présent. Leur approche est heuristique et analytique. On propose dans cet article une approche stochastique de cette classe de processus, dans le cadre général d’une variété lorentzienne quelconque. Le cas des variétés fortement causales permet de donner une définition claire et simple de la “one-particle distribution function” associée ̀à chacun de ces processus et donne un cadre adéquat pour y prouver une propriété fondamentale. Ce résultat donne non seulement une justification dynamique de l’approche anaytique utilisée jusqu’̀à présent (recouvrant au passage la plupart des résultats obtenus jusqu’alors), mais il fournit aussi un H-théorème général. Il met aussi en lumière l’importance de la structure ̀à grande échelle de la variété dans le comportement asymptotique de la diffusion de Franchi–Le Jan. Cette approche est aussi la source de nombreuses questions intéressantes qui n’ont pas leur pendant analytique.

We consider a large class of piecewise expanding maps T of [0, 1] with a neutral fixed point, and their associated Markov chains Y_i whose transition kernel is the Perron–Frobenius operator of T with respect to the absolutely continuous invariant probability measure. We give a large class of unbounded functions f for which the partial sums of f○Tⁱ satisfy both a central limit theorem and a bounded law of the iterated logarithm. For the same class, we prove that the partial sums of f(Y_i) satisfy a strong invariance principle. When the class is larger, so that the partial sums of f○Tⁱ may belong to the domain of normal attraction of a stable law of index p∈(1, 2), we show that the almost sure rates of convergence in the strong law of large numbers are the same as in the corresponding i.i.d. case.

On considère une classe de transformations dilatantes T de [0, 1] ayant un point fixe neutre, ainsi que les chaînes de Markov associées Y_i, dont le noyau de transition est l’opérateur de Perron–Frobenius de T par rapport à l’unique mesure de probabilité T-invariante possédant une densité. On montre une loi du logarithme itéré bornée pour les sommes partielles de f○Tⁱ, lorsque f appartient à une classe de fonctions non bornées. Pour la même classe, on montre un principe d’invariance fort pour les sommes partielles de f(Y_i). Lorsqu’on élargit la classe de fonctions, jusqu’à inclure des fonctions f pour lesquelles les sommes partielles de f○Tⁱ appartiennent au domaine d’attraction normal d’une loi stable d’indice p∈(1, 2), on montre que les vitesses de convergence dans la loi forte des grands nombres sont les même que dans le cas i.i.d. correspondant.

We consider the Fluctuation Dissipation Theorem (FDT) of statistical physics from a mathematical perspective. We formalize the concept of “linear response function” in the general framework of Markov processes. We show that for processes out of equilibrium it depends not only on the given Markov process X(s) but also on the chosen perturbation of it. We characterize the set of all possible response functions for a given Markov process and show that at equilibrium they all satisfy the FDT. That is, if the initial measure ν is invariant for the given Markov semi-group, then for any pair of times s<t and nice functions f, g, the dissipation, that is, the derivative in s of the covariance of g(X(t)) and f(X(s)) equals the infinitesimal response at time t and direction g to any Markovian perturbation that alters the invariant measure of X(⋅) in the direction of f at time s. The same applies in the so-called FDT regime near equilibrium, i.e. in the limit s→∞ with t−s fixed, provided X(s) converges in law to an invariant measure for its dynamics. We provide the response function of two generic Markovian perturbations which we then compare and contrast for pure jump processes on a discrete space, for finite-dimensional diffusion processes, and for stochastic spin systems.

Nous considérons le théorème de fluctuation-dissipation de la mechanique statistique dans une approche mathématique. Nous donnons un concept formel de la réponse linéaire dans le cadre général de la théorie des processus de Markov. Nous démontrons que pour un processus hors d’équilibre celle ci dépend non seulement du processus de Markov X(s) mais aussi de la perturbation choisie. Nous charactérisons l’ensemble de toutes les réponses possibles pour un processus de Markov donné et démontrons qu’à l’équilibre elles satisfassent toutes le théorème de fluctuation-dissipation. C’est à dire, si une mesure ν est invariante pour un semigroupe markovien donné, alors pour tout temps s<t et functions régulières f, g, la dissipation, definie comme la dérivée en s de la covariance de g(X(t)) et de f(X(s)) est égale à la réponse infinitésimale au temps t en direction de g pour toute perturbation markovienne qui modifie la mesure invariante ν en direction de f au temps s. Ce résultat s’étend au régime proche de l’équilibre, c.-à.-d. dans la limite s→∞ avec t−s fixe, en supposant que X(s) converge en loi vers sa mesure invariante. Nous donnons la réponse pour deux perturbations markoviennes génériques, que nous comparons ensuite pour des processus de sauts dans un espace discret, pour des diffusions à dimension finie et pour une dynamique stochastique de spins.

In his 2003 paper, Varadhan proves the averaged large deviation principle for the mean velocity of a particle taking a nearest-neighbor random walk in a uniformly elliptic i.i.d. environment on ℤ^d with d≥1, and gives a variational formula for the corresponding rate function I_a. Under Sznitman’s transience condition (T), we show that I_a is strictly convex and analytic on a non-empty open set $\mathcal{A}$, and that the true velocity of the particle is an element (resp. in the boundary) of $\mathcal{A}$ when the walk is non-nestling (resp. nestling). We then identify the unique minimizer of Varadhan’s variational formula at any velocity in $\mathcal{A}$.

The integrated Brownian motion is sometimes known as the Langevin process. Lachal studied several excursion laws induced by the latter. Here we follow a different point of view developed by Pitman for general stationary processes. We first construct a stationary Langevin process and then determine explicitly its stationary excursion measure. This is then used to provide new descriptions of Itô’s excursion measure of the Langevin process reflected at a completely inelastic boundary, which has been introduced recently by Bertoin.

L’intégrale du mouvement Brownien est parfois appelée processus de Langevin. Lachal a étudié plusieurs lois d’excursions qui lui sont associées. Nous suivons ici un point de vue différent, développé par Pitman, pour les processus stationnaires. Nous construisons d’abord un processus de Langevin stationnaire avant d’en déterminer explicitement la mesure d’excursion stationnaire. Ce travail permet alors de fournir une nouvelle description de la mesure d’excursion d’Itô du processus de Langevin réfléchi sur une barrière inélastique, introduit récemment par Bertoin.

We prove an extension of a result by Peres and Solomyak on almost sure absolute continuity in a class of symmetric Bernoulli convolutions.
