In this article it is shown that the Brownian motion on the continuum random tree is the scaling limit of the simple random walks on any family of discrete n-vertex ordered graph trees whose search-depth functions converge to the Brownian excursion as n→∞. We prove both a quenched version (for typical realisations of the trees) and an annealed version (averaged over all realisations of the trees) of our main result. The assumptions of the article cover the important example of simple random walks on the trees generated by the Galton–Watson branching process, conditioned on the total population size.

Dans cet article, nous démontrons qu’un mouvement brownien sur un arbre aléatoire continu est en fait la limite rééchelonnée d’un certain type de marches aléatoires simples; ces marches aléatoires simples évoluent sur n’importe quelle famille de graphes d’arbres discrets ordonnés de n sommets, dont les fonctions de recherche en profondeur convergent vers une excursion brownienne lorsque n→∞. Nous prouvons deux versions de notre résultat principal: une première conditionnelle sur les réalisations typiques des arbres, ainsi qu’une seconde oè l’on prend la moyenne sur toutes les réalisations des arbres. Les hypothèses de cet article couvrent l’exemple important d’une marche aléatoire simple sur les arbres générés par le processus de branchement de Galton–Watson, étant donné la taille de la population totale.

In this paper, we study additive coalescents. Using their representation as fragmentation processes, we prove that the law of a large class of eternal additive coalescents is absolutely continuous with respect to the law of the standard additive coalescent on any bounded time interval.

Nous étudions dans ce papier les coalescents additifs. En utilisant leur représentation en tant que processus de fragmentation, nous prouvons que certains coalescents additifs éternels ont une loi absolument continue par rapport à la loi du coalescent additif standard sur n’importe quel intervalle de temps borné inférieurement.

This paper studies countable systems of linearly and hierarchically interacting diffusions taking values in the positive quadrant. These systems arise in population dynamics for two types of individuals migrating between and interacting within colonies. Their large-scale space–time behavior can be studied by means of a renormalization program. This program, which has been carried out successfully in a number of other cases (mostly one-dimensional), is based on the construction and the analysis of a nonlinear renormalization transformation, acting on the diffusion function for the components of the system and connecting the evolution of successive block averages on successive time scales. We identify a general class of diffusion functions on the positive quadrant for which this renormalization transformation is well defined and, subject to a conjecture on its boundary behavior, can be iterated. Within certain subclasses, we identify the fixed points for the transformation and investigate their domains of attraction. These domains of attraction constitute the universality classes of the system under space–time scaling.

Cet article étudie des systèmes dénombrables de diffusions en interaction hiérarchiques et linéaires vivant dans le quadrant positif. De tels systèmes apparaissent dans la dynamique d’individus de deux types qui migrent tout en interagissant dans des colonies. Le comportement à grande échelle et temps long peut être étudié en utilisant le programme de renormalisation. Ce programme, qui a permis de résoudre d’autres cas (principalement uni-dimensionnels) est basé sur la construction et l’analyse d’une transformation de renormalisation non linéaire, agissant sur la fonction de diffusion des composants du système et connectant l’évolution de blocs moyennés sur le temps à différentes échelles. Nous identifions une classe générale de fonctions de diffusion dans le quadrant positif pour lequel la transformation de renormalisation est bien définie et qui, sous une conjecture de comportement aux bords, peut-être itérée. À l’intérieur de certaines sous-classes, nous identifiens les points fixes de la transformation et étudions leurs domaines d’attraction. Ces domaines d’attraction constitutent les classes d’universalité du système après changement d’échelle dans le temps et l’espace.

In testing that a given distribution P belongs to a parameterized family $\mathcal{P}$, one is often led to compare a nonparametric estimate A_n of some functional A of P with an element A_θn corresponding to an estimate θ_n of θ. In many cases, the asymptotic distribution of goodness-of-fit statistics derived from the process n^1/2(A_n−A_θn) depends on the unknown distribution P. It is shown here that if the sequences A_n and θ_n of estimators are regular in some sense, a parametric bootstrap approach yields valid approximations for the P-values of the tests. In other words if A_n^* and θ_n^* are analogs of A_n and θ_n computed from a sample from P_θn, the empirical processes n^1/2(A_n−A_θn) and n^1/2(A_n^*−A_θn^*) then converge jointly in distribution to independent copies of the same limit. This result is used to establish the validity of the parametric bootstrap method when testing the goodness-of-fit of families of multivariate distributions and copulas. Two types of tests are considered: certain procedures compare the empirical version of a distribution function or copula and its parametric estimation under the null hypothesis; others measure the distance between a parametric and a nonparametric estimation of the distribution associated with the classical probability integral transform. The validity of a two-level bootstrap is also proved in cases where the parametric estimate cannot be computed easily. The methodology is illustrated using a new goodness-of-fit test statistic for copulas based on a Cramér–von Mises functional of the empirical copula process.

Pour tester qu’une loi P donnée provient d’une famille paramétrique $\mathcal{P}$, on est souvent amené à comparer une estimation non paramétrique A_n d’une fonctionnelle A de P à un élément A_θn correspondant à une estimation θ_n de θ. Dans bien des cas, la loi asymptotique de statistiques de tests bâties à partir du processus n^1/2(A_n−A_θn) dépend de la loi inconnue P. On montre ici que si les suites A_n et θ_n d’estimateurs sont régulières dans un sens précis, le recours au rééchantillonnage paramétrique conduit à des approximations valides des seuils des tests. Autrement dit si A_n^* et θ_n^* sont des analogues de A_n et θ_n déduits d’un échantillon de loi P_θn, les processus empiriques n^1/2(A_n−A_θn) et n^1/2(A_n^*−A_θn^*) convergent alors conjointement en loi vers des copies indépendantes de la même limite. Ce résultat est employé pour valider l’approche par rééchantillonnage paramétrique dans le cadre de tests d’adéquation pour des familles de lois et de copules multivariées. Deux types de tests sont envisagés : les uns comparent la version empirique d’une loi ou d’une copule et son estimation paramétrique sous l’hypothèse nulle ; les autres mesurent la distance entre les estimations paramétrique et non paramétrique de la loi associée à la transformation intégrale de probabilité classique. La validité du rééchantillonnage à deux degrés est aussi démontrée dans les cas où l’estimation paramétrique est difficile à calculer. La méthodologie est illustrée au moyen d’un nouveau test d’adéquation de copules fondé sur une fonctionnelle de Cramér–von Mises du processus de copule empirique.

We prove that critical multitype Galton–Watson trees converge after rescaling to the Brownian continuum random tree, under the hypothesis that the offspring distribution is irreducible and has finite covariance matrices. Our study relies on an ancestral decomposition for marked multitype trees, and an induction on the number of types. We then couple the genealogical structure with a spatial motion, whose step distribution may depend on the structure of the tree in a local way, and show that the resulting discrete spatial trees converge once suitably rescaled to the Brownian snake, under some moment assumptions.

Nous montrons que les arbres de Galton–Watson multitypes, dont les lois de reproduction sont irrductibles et de matrices de covariance finies, admettent pour limite d’chelle l’arbre continu brownien. La clef de notre tude est une dcomposition ancestrale pour les arbres multitypes marqus, et une mthode par rcurrence sur le nombre de types. Nous couplons ensuite la structure gnalogique avec des dplacements spaciaux, dont la loi de saut peut dpendre localement de la structure de l’arbre, et nous montrons que les arbres spatiaux obtenus convergent vers le serpent brownien, sous certaines hypothses de moments.

We find the transition kernels for four Markovian interacting particle systems on the line, by proving that each of these kernels is intertwined with a Karlin–McGregor-type kernel. The resulting kernels all inherit the determinantal structure from the Karlin–McGregor formula, and have a similar form to Schütz’s kernel for the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process.

Nous trouvons les noyaux de transition de quatre systèmes markoviens de particules en interaction sur une ligne, en prouvant que chacun de ces noyaux s’entrelace avec un noyau du type de Karlin–McGregor. Tous les noyaux résultants héritent de la structure de déterminant de la formule de Karlin–McGregor et ont une forme similaire à celle du noyau de Schütz pour le processus d’exclusion simple totalement asymétrique.

We study models of spatial growth processes where initially there are sources of growth (indicated by the colour green) and sources of a growth-stopping (paralyzing) substance (indicated by red). The green sources expand and may merge with others (there is no ‘inter-green’ competition). The red substance remains passive as long as it is isolated. However, when a green cluster comes in touch with the red substance, it is immediately invaded by the latter, stops growing and starts to act as a red substance itself. Our main model space is represented by a graph, of which initially each vertex is randomly green, red or white (vacant), and the growth of the green clusters is similar to that in first-passage percolation. The main issues we investigate are whether the model is well defined on an infinite graph (e.g. the d-dimensional cubic lattice), and what can be said about the distribution of the size of a green cluster just before it is paralyzed. We show that, if the initial density of red vertices is positive, and that of white vertices is sufficiently small, the model is indeed well defined and the above distribution has an exponential tail. In fact, we believe this to be true whenever the initial density of red is positive. This research also led to a relation between invasion percolation and critical Bernoulli percolation which seems to be of independent interest.

Nous étudions des modèles de croissance spatiaux qui, au temps initial, ont des sources de croissance (indiquées par la couleur verte) et des sources de substance paralysante arrêtant la croissance (indiquées en rouge). Les sources vertes augmentent et peuvent fusionner avec les autres (il n’y a pas de compétition entre elles). La substance rouge reste passive quand elle est isolée. Cependant, quand un amas vert touche la substance rouge, il est envahi immédiatement par cette dernière, il arrête de grandir et commence à agir comme la substance rouge. Dans notre modèle principal, l’espace est représenté par un graphe dont, à l’instant initial, tous les sommets sont tirés au hasard vert, rouge ou blanc (vide) et la croissance des amas verts est similaire à celle de la percolation de premier-passage. Les problèmes principaux que nous considèrons sont les suivants ; est-ce que le modèle est bien défini sur un graphe infini (par exemple le treillis d-dimensionnel) ? Que peut-on dire de la distribution de la taille d’un amas vert juste avant qu’il soit paralysé ? Nous montrons que, si la densité initiale de sommets rouges est positive et que celle des sommets blancs est suffisament petite, le modèle est en effet bien défini et la distribution ci-dessus mentionnée a une queue exponentielle. Nous conjecturons que ce résultat est vrai dès que la densité initiale des rouges est positive. Ce travail mène également à une relation entre la percolation d’invasion et la percolation de Bernouilli critique qui semble être d’intérêt indépendement.
