Statistics is a most important basic science for psychiatry. More and more often psychiatric researchers resort to sophisticated and powerful statistical techniques to help them unravel the complexities of their data. In this paper, the relationship between the two disciplines and their members is discussed in the context of the use of statistics in psychiatry in general.

The problem considered is that of approximation to the structure of the stationary process generating a vector time series by a rational transfer function, i.e. ARMA, system. The structure of such systems and their coordinatization are discussed together with some deterministic approximation theory. Criteria on the basis of which to choose an approximant are considered. Theorems supporting such criteria and describing the properties of approximants are given. Finally some algorithms are described including algorithms for real time calculation of the estimates.

This is a personal account and reminiscences concerning some of the highlights of the history and important events in the development of survey sampling as perceived by the author. It gives special emphasis to the developments at the Bureau of the Census in the late 1930s through the 1960s, reviews early acquisition of Univac and related equipment at the Bureau of the Census and briefly discusses the more recent issue that has received attention concerning the role of probability sampling versus model-dependent sampling.

The core data of molecular biology consists of DNA sequences. We will show how DNA sequences may be used to infer the evolution of the primates, human, chimpanzee, ape, orangutan and gibbon. The underlying probability models are taken to be Markov processes on trees. Some dependencies along the sequence due to the genetic code are also considered.
