We first describe the main features of Malinowski's book Many-Valued Logics: its orientation and its contents. The rest of our paper is devoted to the discussion of its original point, the presentation of Suszko's thesis, and questions directly related to it: What is many-valuedness? Are there only two truth-values?
We analyse and discuss the characterization of many-valuedness and the reduction of many-valuedness to two-valuedness presented by Malinowski. Then we argue against Suszko's thesis, taking examples of paraconsistent logic and of Malinowski's inferential many-valuedness. However, we also present some arguments to reject supplementary truth-values in the case of two topics discussed by Malinowski: modality and partiality.
Oleg Fedorovich Serebryannikov, whose scientific career was carried out at the University of Saint-Petersburg, died in 1991. He was especially interested in heuristic problems and principles of mathematical problems solving and in their connection with methods of formal deduction. In his technical research, he was noted for his work on normalization proofs, that is for proofs of cutelimination, or normal form theorems, for Gentzen-type calculi, and for modal logics, such as the systems S4.2 and S5.
Iosif Nusimovich Brodskiĭ, a member of the philosophy department faculty of the University of Saint-Petersburg, one of the founders of the contemporary Saint-Petersburgian logic school, died in 1994. His greatest influence as a pedagogue was through such courses as "Mathematical Logic", "Philosophical Problems of Logic", and "Introduction to the Theory of Algorithms". His textbook Elementary Introduction to Symbolic Logic went through two editions.
