We introduce the notion of a hamiltonian 2-form on a Kähler manifold and obtain a complete local classification. This notion appears to play a pivotal role in several aspects of Kähler geometry. In particular, on any Kähler manifold with co-closed Bochner tensor, the (suitably normalized) Ricci form is hamiltonian, and this leads to an explicit description of these Kähler metrics, which we call weakly Bochner-flat. Hamiltonian 2-forms also arise on conformally Einstein Kähler manifolds and provide an Ansatz for extremal Kähler metrics unifying and extending many previous constructions.
The main result of this paper states that a symplectic s-cobordism of elliptic 3-manifolds is diffeomorphic to a product (assuming a canonical contact structure on the boundary). Based on this theorem, we conjecture that a smooth s-cobordism of elliptic 3-manifolds is smoothly a product if its universal cover is smoothly a product. We explain how the conjecture fits naturally into the program of Taubes of constructing symplectic structures on an oriented smooth 4-manifold with b+2 ≥ 1 from generic self-dual harmonic forms. The paper also contains an auxiliary result of independent interest, which generalizes Taubes' theorem "SW ⇒ Gr" to the case of symplectic 4-orbifolds.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the Kähler-Ricci flow on Kähler manifolds of nonnegative holomorphic bisectional curvature. Using these results we prove that a complete noncompact Kähler manifold with nonnegative and bounded holomorphic bi-sectional curvature and maximal volume growth is biholomorphic to complex Euclidean space Cn. We also show that the volume growth condition can be removed if we assume the Kähler manifold has average quadratic scalar curvature decay and positive curvature operator.
