In recent years there has been explosive growth in the number of neuroimaging studies performed using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). The field that has grown around the acquisition and analysis of fMRI data is intrinsically interdisciplinary in nature and involves contributions from researchers in neuroscience, psychology, physics and statistics, among others. A standard fMRI study gives rise to massive amounts of noisy data with a complicated spatio-temporal correlation structure. Statistics plays a crucial role in understanding the nature of the data and obtaining relevant results that can be used and interpreted by neuroscientists. In this paper we discuss the analysis of fMRI data, from the initial acquisition of the raw data to its use in locating brain activity, making inference about brain connectivity and predictions about psychological or disease states. Along the way, we illustrate interesting and important issues where statistics already plays a crucial role. We also seek to illustrate areas where statistics has perhaps been underutilized and will have an increased role in the future.

We outline how modern likelihood theory, which provides essentially exact inferences in a variety of parametric statistical problems, may routinely be applied in practice. Although the likelihood procedures are based on analytical asymptotic approximations, the focus of this paper is not on theory but on implementation and applications. Numerical illustrations are given for logistic regression, nonlinear models, and linear non-normal models, and we describe a sampling approach for the third of these classes. In the case of logistic regression, we argue that approximations are often more appropriate than ‘exact’ procedures, even when these exist.

We provide a remedy for two concerns that have dogged the use of principal components in regression: (i) principal components are computed from the predictors alone and do not make apparent use of the response, and (ii) principal components are not invariant or equivariant under full rank linear transformation of the predictors. The development begins with principal fitted components [Cook, R. D. (2007). Fisher lecture: Dimension reduction in regression (with discussion). Statist. Sci. 22 1–26] and uses normal models for the inverse regression of the predictors on the response to gain reductive information for the forward regression of interest. This approach includes methodology for testing hypotheses about the number of components and about conditional independencies among the predictors.

Statistical graphics and data visualization have long histories, but their modern forms began only in the early 1800s. Between roughly 1850 and 1900 (±10), an explosive growth occurred in both the general use of graphic methods and the range of topics to which they were applied. Innovations were prodigious and some of the most exquisite graphics ever produced appeared, resulting in what may be called the “Golden Age of Statistical Graphics.”

In this article I trace the origins of this period in terms of the infrastructure required to produce this explosive growth: recognition of the importance of systematic data collection by the state; the rise of statistical theory and statistical thinking; enabling developments of technology; and inventions of novel methods to portray statistical data. To illustrate, I describe some specific contributions that give rise to the appellation “Golden Age.”

Wasssily Hoeffding’s terminal illness and untimely death in 1991 put an end to efforts that were made to interview him for Statistical Science. An account of his scientific work is given in Fisher and Sen [The Collected Works of Wassily Hoeffding (1994) Springer], but the present authors felt that the statistical community should also be told about the life of this remarkable man. He contributed much to statistical science, but will also live on in the memory of those who knew him as a kind and modest teacher and friend, whose courage and learning were matched by a wonderful sense of humor.

Pranab Kumar Sen was born on November 7, 1937 in Calcutta, India. His father died when Pranab was 10 years old, so his mother raised the family of seven children. Given his superior performance on an exam, Pranab nearly went into medical school, but did not because he was underage. He received a B.Sc. degree in 1955 and an M.Sc. degree in 1957 in statistics from Calcutta University, topping the class both times. Dr. Sen’s dissertation on order statistics and nonparametrics, under the direction of Professor Hari Kinkar Nandi, was completed in 1961. After teaching for three years at Calcutta University, 1961–1964, Professor Sen came to Berkeley as a Visiting Assistant Professor in 1964. In 1965, he joined the Departments of Statistics and Biostatistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he has remained.

Professor Sen’s pioneering contributions have touched nearly every area of statistics. He is the first person who, in joint collaboration with Professor S. K. Chatterjee, developed multivariate rank tests as well as time-sequential nonparametric methods. He is also the first person who carried out in-depth research in sequential nonparametrics culminating in his now famous Wiley book Sequential Nonparametrics: Invariance Principles and Statistical Inference and SIAM monograph. Professor Sen has over 600 research publications. In addition, he has authored or co-authored 11 books and monographs, and has edited or co-edited 11 more volumes. He has supervised over 80 Ph.D. students, many of whom have achieved distinction both nationally and internationally. Professor Sen is the founding co-editor of two international journals: Sequential Analysis and Statistics and Decisions. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. Professor Sen was the third recipient of the prestigious Senior Noether Award offered by the Nonparametrics Section of the American Statistical Association. In 2007, a Festschrift was held in his honor at the Nonparametrics Conference on the 70th anniversary of his birth.
