The Mathematical Institute was established in 1911 within the Tohoku Imperial University. In 1947, Tohoku Imperial University became Tohoku University, one of the National Seven Universities in Japan. The Mathematical Institute is organized into five areas: algebra, geometry, analysis, manifold theory, and applied mathematics.
