For irrational $\beta>1$ we consider the set ${\rm Fin}(\beta)$ ofreal numbers for which $|x|$ has a finite number of non-zerodigits in its expansion in base $\beta$. In particular, weconsider the set of $\beta$-integers, i.e. numbers whose$\beta$-expansion is of the form $\sum_{i=0}^nx_i\beta^i$,$n\geq0$. We discuss some necessary and some sufficient conditionsfor ${\rm Fin(\beta)}$ to be a ring. We also describe methods toestimate the number of fractional digits that appear by additionor multiplication of $\beta$-integers. We apply these methodsamong others to the real solution $\beta$ of $x^3=x^2+x+1$, theso-called Tribonacci number. In this case we show thatmultiplication of arbitrary $\beta$-integers has a fractional partof length at most 5. We show an example of a $\beta$-integer $x$such that $x\cdot x$ has the fractional part of length $4$. Bythat we improve the bound provided by Messaoudi from value 9 to 5; in the same time we refute the conjecture ofArnoux that 3 is the maximal number of fractional digits appearingin Tribonacci multiplication.

Les mots infinis engendrés par des morphismes itérés (ou mots purement substitutifs) jouent unrôle important dans la combinatoire des mots. Dans cet article, nous considérons la classe plus large des motssubstitutifs, c'est à dire l'ensemble des mots infinis obtenus comme images morphiques de mots purement substitutifs.Nous montrons que cette nouvelle classe est strictement plus large que la précédente puis que les mots substitutifss'écrivent comme les images par des morphismes remarquables de mots infinis engendrés par des endomorphismesremarquables. Nous montrons enfin que ces morphismes remarquables permettent de contrôler la complexité en facteursdes mots infinis auxquels ils sont appliqués.

Infinite words generated by iterated morphisms (or purely substitutive words) play an important part incombinatorics on words. In this article, we consider the larger class of substitutive words, that is infinite wordsobtained as morphic images of purely substitutive words. We show that this new class is strictly larger than that ofpurely substitutive words, and then that substitutive words can be written as images under a certain type of morphismsof infinite words generated by iterating a certain type of morphisms. Finally we show that these remarkable morphismsallow to control the subword complexity of the infinite words they are applied to.

Nousdonnons la construction d'un ensemble inévitable de mots de longueur $k$dont le cardinal est égal au nombre de classes de conjugaison.

A set of words $X$ is said to be unavoidable on a given alphabet $A$ if every infinite wordon $A$ has a factor in $X$. The cardinality of an unavoidable setof words of length $k$ on an alphabet $A$ is not less thanthe number of conjugacy classes of words of length $k$ on $A$.We show how to construct an unavoidable setof words of length $k$ the cardinality of which is equal tothe number of conjugacy classes.

Le point de départ de l'étude présentée ici est cette "malice" de certaines langues du Sud-Est Asiatique qui s'écrivent sans que des espaces séparent les mots. Les traitements automatiques de ces langues s'en trouvent compliqués d'autant que, dès le premier niveau, celui des syllabes, le découpage des textes n'est en général pas unique. Autrement dit, rapporté à la combinatoire des mots, le système syllabique de ces langues n'est pas un code. On s'intéresse ici à l'origine des ambiguïtés de découpage, plus précisément au recensement de celles qu'on appelle irréductibles, en ce sens qu'elles sont à l'origine de toutes les autres. On montre que le langage des ambiguïtés irréductibles est rationnel et on présente le moyen d'en calculer une expression régulière en l'étayant de l'expérience de son application à la langue laotienne.

The starting point of this study is that the written formof certain South-East Asian languages does not use spaces between words, thus complicating their automatic processing. This is particularly the case on the syllabic level, where generally the text cannot be cut up uniquely. From the formal combinatorics point of view, the syllabic system of these languages is not a code. We will focus on the origin of the splittingambiguities, more specifically on the inventory of the so-called irreducible ambiguities, in the sense that all others originate from them. We prove that the language of irreducible ambiguities is rational. Then we present a method to compute one of its regular expressions, illustrating the method with the experience of its application to the Lao language.

We study the links between the topological complexity of an$\omega$-context free language and its degree of ambiguity.In particular, using known facts from classicaldescriptive set theory, we prove that non Borel $\omega$-context free languages which are recognized by Büchipushdown automata have a maximum degree of ambiguity.This result implies that degrees of ambiguity are really not preserved bythe operation$W \rightarrow W^\omega$, defined over finitary context free languages.We prove also that taking the adherence or the $\delta$-limit of a finitarylanguagepreserves neither ambiguity nor inherent ambiguity. On the other side we show that methods used in the study of$\omega$-context free languagescan also be applied to study the notion of ambiguity ininfinitary rational relations accepted by Büchi 2-tape automataand we get first results in that direction.

Let $p$ and $q$ be two distinct positive integers and let $\alpha=-p+i$ and $\beta=-q+i$. Assuming that {\it the four exponentials conjecture\/} is true, it is shown that if a set $S$ of Gaussian integers is $(\alpha,\beta)$-recognizable, then it is syndetic.

We study the action of right conjugates of a standard morphism on the infinite word (if it exists)generated by this morphism. When $g$ is the $i$-th right conjugate of a standard morphism generating an infinite word${\bf x}$, $g({\bf x})$ is the $i$-th conjugate of ${\bf x}$. We design an algorithm to obtain a canonical decomposition of all theright conjugates of a standard morphism. As an application we compute the sequence of conjugates of the powers of theFibonacci morphism and then we generalize, to all the conjugates of ${\bf F}$, Wen and Wen's decomposition of the Fibonacciword ${\bf F}$ in singular words.

Nous étudions l'action des conjugués à droite d'un morphisme standard sur le mot infini (s'il existe) engendré par ce morphisme. Quand $g$ est le \linebreak $i$-ème conjugué à droite d'un morphisme standardengendrant un mot infini $\x$, $g(\x)$ est le $i$-ème conjugué de $\x.$ Nous décrivons un algorithme pour obtenirune décomposition canonique de tous les conjugués à droite d'un morphisme standard, puis, appliquant ce résultatau calcul de la suite de tous les conjugués à droite du morphisme de Fibonacci, nous généralisons àl'ensemble des conjugués de $\F$ la décomposition de Wen et Wen du mot de Fibonacci $\F$ en mots singuliers.

We prove that for any finite prefix code $X$ with $n$elements, the non special subgroups in the syntactic monoid of $X^*$have degree at most $n-1$. This implies in particular that thegroups in the syntactic monoid of $X^*$ are all cyclic when $X$is a prefix code with three elements.

Cet article présente un nouveau résultat sur les groupes $G$ apparaissantdans les monoïdes syntaxiques d'ensembles de la forme $X^*$ où $X$est un code préfixe fini. Nous prouvons que si $X$ a $n$ éléments,alors $G$ est de degré au plus $n-1$ en tant que groupe de permutations.Nous situons ce résultat au sein des autres résultats connus surles propriétés syntaxiques des codes finis.

We characterize Lyndon morphisms (that is free monoids morphisms that preserve finite Lyndonwords) and morphisms thatpreserve lexicographic order between finite words. We prove that themonoids of these morphisms are not finitely generated. We endcharacterizing the episturmian morphisms that are Lyndon morphisms andthose that are order-preserving.

Nous caractérisons les morphismes de Lyndon (à savoir les morphismesqui préservent les mots de Lyndon) ainsi que les morphismes quipréservent l'ordre lexicographique sur les mots finis. Nous montronsque les monoïdes formés de ces morphismes ne sont pas finimentengendrés. Nous caractérisons les morphismes épisturmiens quiappartiennent à chacune des deux familles de morphismes précédentes.

This article presents a survey about balanced words. The balance property comes from combinatorics onwordsand is used as a characteristic property of the well-known Sturmian words. The main goal of this survey is to studyvarious generalizations of this notion with applications and with open problems in number theory and in theoreticalcomputer science. We also prove a new result about the generalized balance property of hypercubic billiard words.
