Splitting fields for $E_{8}$-torsors

Abstract

We show that every algebraic group of type $E_{8}$ over any field becomes split over some field extension of degree dividing $2^{6}\cdot 3^{2}\cdot 5=2880$. This improves a bound by Tits and, in fact, is optimal.
